📖 7 minute read
Crochet patterns have their own language. The good news: once you learn about ten abbreviations, you can practically read any pattern. ✨
Most common abbreviations (Italian patterns)
| Abbreviation | Meaning |
|---|---|
| cdn | Chain |
| bsss | Slip stitch |
| bs / mb | Single crochet |
| mpa / mma | Half double crochet |
| pa / ma | Double crochet |
| pad / md | Treble crochet |
| aum | Increase (2 stitches in the same) |
| dim | Decrease (2 stitches joined into 1) |
Warning: UK vs US
English patterns have different names. The most dangerous pitfall: double crochet (dc) means "single crochet" in UK but "double crochet" in US. For an English pattern, always check if it's UK or US in the first lines of the legend.
5 strategies to avoid getting lost
- Read the entire pattern before starting: this gives you a general idea of the structure
- Mark your place: tick off each completed round
- Count your stitches at the end of each round: the number in parentheses is your check
- Keep patterns on a tablet or in print: reading on a phone is a struggle
- Don't work when you're tired: reading errors are most frequent late at night
