📖 7 minute read

Crochet patterns have their own language. The good news: once you learn about ten abbreviations, you can practically read any pattern. ✨

Most common abbreviations (Italian patterns)

Abbreviation Meaning
cdn Chain
bsss Slip stitch
bs / mb Single crochet
mpa / mma Half double crochet
pa / ma Double crochet
pad / md Treble crochet
aum Increase (2 stitches in the same)
dim Decrease (2 stitches joined into 1)

Warning: UK vs US

English patterns have different names. The most dangerous pitfall: double crochet (dc) means "single crochet" in UK but "double crochet" in US. For an English pattern, always check if it's UK or US in the first lines of the legend.

5 strategies to avoid getting lost

  1. Read the entire pattern before starting: this gives you a general idea of the structure
  2. Mark your place: tick off each completed round
  3. Count your stitches at the end of each round: the number in parentheses is your check
  4. Keep patterns on a tablet or in print: reading on a phone is a struggle
  5. Don't work when you're tired: reading errors are most frequent late at night

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to learn how to read patterns to make crochet bags?
Not necessarily. Video tutorials show you exactly what to do. Learning patterns is useful if you want to free yourself from tutorials and make projects from books or magazines. For the first 3-4 projects, tutorials are enough.
How long does it take to learn to read a pattern?
For patterns written in Italian: 2-3 hours of practice. For chart patterns: 5-10 hours. For patterns in English: add 2-3 hours for UK/US conversion.
Can I use free patterns I find online?
Yes, but carefully: check the source. Some free patterns have errors. Prefer established crochet schools and recognized artisan YouTube channels.
What are the most difficult symbols to memorize?
Those for the double crochet and its variants (mpa, pa, pad) get confused because they are all "T"s with different bars. Trick: more bars = taller stitch.
Are there apps to read/follow patterns?
Yes, there are several (Stitch Counter, Crochet Counter, etc.) that help keep track of rows. Most are free or cost a few euros.

In summary

With 10-15 hours of practice, you can read almost anything. If you're a beginner, start with Italian video tutorials and our beginner kits. 💕
