📖 6 minute read

You're in front of the shelves (virtual or physical) of our shop and you have to choose: t-shirt yarn or cord yarn? They are the two most popular yarns for crochet bags, but they are profoundly different — and choosing the wrong one means starting off on the wrong foot, with a final result that will never be what you have in mind.

In this guide, we compare the two yarns: composition, finished look, difficulty, cost, and the type of bag each creates. By the end, you'll know exactly which one to choose for your next project. ✨

Cord Yarn: What it is and its Result

Cord yarn is a cotton (or cotton blend) yarn worked into a tubular cord: the tactile effect is compact, slightly stiff, similar to a soft, thin rope. It comes in different thicknesses (4mm for classic, 6mm for Big) and many colors.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I mix cord yarn and t-shirt yarn in the same bag?
Yes, but with caution. If you want a contrasting effect—for example, a cord yarn border on a bag primarily made of t-shirt yarn—it works. But change your crochet hook when switching from one yarn to another, otherwise the tension will be disastrous. This is an advanced technique, not recommended for your first project.
Which of the two lasts longer?
Cord yarn is objectively more resistant over time: the compact yarn holds up better to friction, washing, and sun exposure. A classic cord yarn clutch can potentially last decades. A pizza t-shirt yarn bag will still last for years if treated well, but the yarn will “flatten” slightly with prolonged use.
Which costs more to make a bag?
It depends on the bag. For small models (clutches, mini bags), t-shirt yarn is slightly cheaper than cord yarn. For large models, the quantities reverse, and cord yarn becomes more economical. On average, for a “medium” bag, the costs are comparable.
Which is easier for beginners to work with?
Generally, lycra pizza t-shirt yarn is slightly more beginner-friendly for two reasons: (1) the stitch is more visible because it's thick, (2) it has a little elasticity that "forgives" tension errors. But be careful: for your very first bag, we still recommend Classic Pandorino.
Is there a yarn that has both the structure of cord yarn and the softness of t-shirt yarn?
Yes, it's our Fettuccia Cordino 500g: a hybrid between the two, it maintains its shape like cord yarn but with a softer effect. This is the yarn we use for the Marisa Bag.

In summary

  • Do you want structure, elegance, durability? → Cord yarn.
  • Do you want softness, lightness, speed? → T-shirt yarn.
  • Do you want a happy medium? → Fettuccia Cordino.
