A crocheted bag without a lining is a "half" bag. The lining is what transforms a handmade bag into something professional. It's not difficult: with the simplest method, it takes 1-2 hours, no sewing machine needed. ✨

The 3 main methods for lining

Method 1: Glued lining (1 hour) — for those who have never sewn

Textile glue is used to attach the fabric to the inside of the bag. You'll need: cotton fabric (50×50 cm), textile glue, scissors, ruler. Cut 2 rectangles, fold the edges, glue along the inner perimeter. Let dry for 24 hours.

Cons: glued lining cannot withstand water washing.

Method 2: Hand-stitched lining (2-3 hours) — the middle ground

Cut 2 rectangles, sew 3 sides together to create a "pouch," insert it into the bag, sew the top edge to the inner edge of the bag with hand stitches. Durable and washable.

Method 3: Tailored machine-sewn lining (3-4 hours) — professional result

True lining with internal pockets and zipper option. Requires a sewing machine and basic tailoring skills. The result is indistinguishable from a professional bag.

Recommended fabrics

  • Cotton poplin: the most versatile, affordable, in a thousand colors
  • Satin: luxurious effect, great for elegant clutches
  • Printed cotton: for a creative contrast (patterned inside, solid outside)
  • Light linen: for summer bags in raffia or cotton

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to line the bag even if it already has a rigid bottom?
Yes, because the rigid bottom only protects the base, not the sides. The lining completes the internal covering and prevents small items from falling out through the side stitches.
Can I add internal pockets to the lining?
Absolutely. A small internal pocket 10×10 cm for credit cards or keys changes the practicality of the bag. A simple pocket (a rectangle sewn on 3 sides directly to the lining fabric before assembling) is within everyone's reach.
Can I use an old fabric instead of buying a new one?
Of course. An old pillowcase, a discarded shirt, a scarf you no longer use: these are excellent raw materials for the lining.
Does the lining change how the bag is washed?
Yes: glued lining (Method 1) cannot withstand water washing. If the lining is sewn, the bag can be washed normally by hand in cold water.
How much fabric is needed for a medium-sized bag?
For a 25×30 cm bag, 50×50 cm of fabric is enough. For a larger shopping bag, plan for 70×70 cm. It's better to have a little extra.

In summary

For your first bag, start with method 1 (glued). From the second, move on to method 2 (hand-stitched): the leap in quality is enormous. 💕
