📖 7 minute read

After a few hours of crocheting, does your wrist ache, and your fingers tingle? In the vast majority of cases, it's due to an incorrect grip. This guide covers the two main grips, how to hold the yarn, correct posture, and what to do if you experience the first signs of pain. ✨

The two main grips

Pencil grip

You hold the crochet hook exactly like a pen: between your thumb, index, and middle fingers, with your hand over the handle. It's the most common in Italy, suitable for thin yarns like cotton, pandorino, and classic cord.

Knife grip

You hold the crochet hook in a closed fist, like a kitchen knife. This is more suitable for thick yarns (pizza ribbon, marshmallow) and for those who work for long periods, as it reduces wrist strain.

Which grip for which yarn

  • Cotton, pandorino, classic cord (hook 3-5) → pencil grip
  • Pizza ribbon, cotton ribbon (hook 8-12) → knife grip
  • Marshmallow, XXL yarns (hook 15-20) → mandatory knife grip

Correct posture

  • Sit upright: back supported, shoulders relaxed
  • Forearms supported: on an armrest or a cushion
  • Work at the right height: at chest height, never on your lap
  • Break every 30-45 minutes: stand up, stretch your hands

Signs not to ignore

  1. Persistent tingling in your fingers even when not working → possible carpal tunnel
  2. Wrist pain that doesn't go away after a night's rest
  3. Loss of strength in your crocheting hand

In these cases, stop for a few days, and if the symptoms don't subside, consult a doctor.

You work well when you have the right tools

Try the ergonomic crochet hooks with a plastic base — most of our customers who crochet a lot choose them specifically to reduce wrist fatigue.

Frequently asked questions

Can I change my grip after years of crocheting?
Yes, but it requires time and patience. Expect to feel "clumsy" for the first 5-10 hours with the new grip. It's worth persevering for at least 20 hours of work before evaluating.
Do I need to change my grip if I don't have pain?
No. If your current grip allows you to work for hours without discomfort, it's the right grip for you. There is no single "optimal grip."
Are there alternative grips besides the two main ones?
Yes, some people use hybrid variations. The important thing in any case is that your hand remains relaxed, not tense.
Can I crochet if I already have carpal tunnel syndrome?
It depends on the severity. In mild cases, it can be practiced carefully. In more severe cases, it can worsen symptoms. Always consult your doctor.
How long can I work per day without issues?
With the correct grip and regular breaks (5 minutes every 30-45 minutes of work), a healthy person can work up to 3-4 hours a day. Always listen to your body.

In summary

The right grip is one where your hand remains relaxed. Don't underestimate posture and take regular breaks. 💕
