📖 6 minute read

"Macrè, how much yarn do I need to make a bag?" — is probably the question we hear most often. And it makes sense: before buying yarn, you want to know how many balls to get. Not too many (to avoid wasting money), nor too few (to avoid getting stuck halfway through a project with an unavailable color).

In this guide, we give you practical numbers to calculate the amount of yarn based on the pattern, dimensions, and type of yarn you've chosen. These are based on experience, not mathematical guarantees — but these are the guidelines we use to proportion the kits in our catalog.

The 4 factors that determine the amount of yarn

Before we get to the numbers, let's explain what the yarn consumption of a bag depends on:

  1. Finished bag dimensions: The larger it is, the more yarn you need. A 15x10 cm mini bag uses less than a 35x40 cm shopping bag.
  2. Yarn type: For the same dimensions, a bag made from classic cord (thin yarn, small stitches) uses more balls than a bag made from pizza fettuccia (thick yarn, large stitches).
  3. Type of stitch used: Dense stitches (single crochet, half double crochet) consume more yarn than open stitches (mesh, lace). Single crochet can require 30-40% more yarn than double crochet for the same surface area.
  4. Work tension: If you have a very tight tension, you use more yarn than average; with loose tension, you use less. The variation between a standard tension and a loose tension can be up to 15-20%.

That said, here are the reference numbers for each Macrè yarn.

How many balls for each yarn

Classic Cord 500g

The 500g Classic Cord is the most used yarn for structured bags. Indicative quantities:

  • Pouch / Mini bag (15-20 cm): 1 pack (500g) is sufficient, often even less
  • Clutch / Small handbag (20-25 cm): 1 exact pack
  • Medium handbag (25-30 cm): 1-2 packs (better to have half an extra)
  • Large bag / Shopping bag (30+ cm): 2 full packs

Lurex Cord 250g

The 250g Lurex Cord is designed for elegant mini bags and clutches:

  • Mini bag / Small pouch: 1 pack (250g)
  • Elegant clutch: 1 generous pack (2 are better if you want a rich result)

Pizza Lycra Fettuccia

The Pizza Lycra Fettuccia is sold in packs that vary depending on the color:

  • Medium handbag: 1 pack
  • Large bag / Shopping bag: 1-2 packs
  • XXL openwork bag: 2 packs

Marshmallow Cotton 500g

The Marshmallow Cotton is voluminous and covers a lot of surface area:

  • Marshmallow mini bag: 250-500g (half pack - 1 pack)
  • Super soft XXL bag: 1 pack (500g)

Frequently asked questions

How much yarn do I need for my first bag?
For your very first project, we recommend starting with a mini bag or small pouch: 1 ball of Pandorino Classico 250g or 1 ball of Cotone Magico 100g is enough. Minimum investment, satisfying result in a few hours.
Are balls of the same color from different dye lots identical?
Not always. Different dye lots (same shade) can have slight tonal differences, especially visible under natural light. For important projects, buy all the necessary balls at once and check that the dye lot is identical on all of them.
Can I extend the yarn if it runs out halfway through the project?
Yes: make a small square knot and continue. The critical point is to hide it well in the stitch so that it is not visible from the outside.
How much does my tension affect consumption?
It can affect it by up to 20% more or less. If you are a beginner, it's easy to work with tight tension, which means consuming 10-15% more yarn than standard indications. Always better to have one more than one less.
Do Macrè kits have pre-portioned yarn?
Yes. In our complete kits you will find the exact amount of yarn for the pattern, calculated based on the stitch and dimensions indicated in the tutorial. You don't have to calculate anything — open the kit and start working.

Don't want to worry about calculations?

Choose a complete kit with pre-portioned yarn and included video tutorial. The quantity is perfect — you've already paid for it, no more is needed.

In summary

Calculating how much yarn you need for a crocheted bag is not an exact science, but the guidelines in this article provide a reliable starting point for 90% of projects. When in doubt, the golden rule is simple: always buy one extra ball. Finishing an important project with unmatched yarn is the frustration that most frequently leads people to abandon crochet.
