If there's one bag that's never missing from our customers' wardrobes, it's the clutch bag. Elegant, compact, versatile: you take it to a wedding, use it for an anniversary, or open it at an exhibition opening. It's one of those bags that saves your evening and—when handmade by you—also becomes a source of personal pride.

In this guide, we'll tell you everything you need to know to make a crocheted clutch bag: the yarns that work best, the closures that add a professional touch, 5 models to create, and some mistakes to avoid if it's your first time.

What is a clutch bag and why is it so popular?

A clutch bag is a small, rigid or semi-rigid bag without a shoulder strap, meant to be held in the hand (the English word "clutch" means "to grasp tightly"). It originated in the 1920s as an evening accessory and has since remained a symbol of minimalist elegance: all essentials in a small space, no frills.

In recent years, the clutch has made a strong comeback in our customers' searches, especially in its handmade crocheted version. The reasons are simple:

  • It's a quick project: you can make it in 6-10 hours, much less than a large bag.
  • Uses little yarn: typically 1-2 skeins, so it's also economical.
  • Suits elegant yarns: lurex, chenille, velvet — where a tote bag would be excessive, a clutch is perfect.
  • Makes a great gift: small, refined, customizable in color.

The best yarns for a crocheted clutch bag

A clutch bag needs a yarn that provides structure without adding bulk. Nothing too soft (it would lose its shape) or too voluminous (it would lose its elegance). Here are our favorites for every style.

Classic cord — for a daytime clutch

The Classic Cord 500g is the ideal yarn for a daytime clutch: compact, structured, in sober colors (cream, black, blue, burgundy) that are easy to match. It's what we use for the classic Loretta Bag Kit, our most popular clutch.

Lurex Cord — for evening occasions

The Lurex Cord 250g is the shiny version of the classic, in metallic colors (gold, silver, cyclamen, lurex chocolate). For an evening, formal, or wedding clutch, it's the right choice. It's what we use in the Loretta Lurex Bag Kit and in the evening versions of the Stella Bag.

Lurex Ribbon and Bon Lurex — for bright but soft clutches

The Lurex Ribbon 150g and the Bon Lurex Ribbon 250g (60% cotton and lurex composition) give the clutch a soft yet shiny effect. They are perfect if you like the idea of an elegant clutch but want something less structured than pure cord.

Chenille and velvet — for an autumn-winter clutch

For winter clutches (ceremonies from October to March, holiday season), the right yarn is chenille, which has a soft, velvet-like effect. It's what we use in the Matilde Bag Kit, a stewardess-shaped clutch that is one of our most loved during the cold season.

5 Macrè clutch bag models to make

Here are 5 clutch bag models we recommend, ordered from simplest to most structured. For each, you'll find the difficulty level, recommended yarn, and a link to the complete kit (including video tutorial) or the free tutorial on YouTube.

1. Ada Mini Bag — the perfect compact clutch to start with

Our smallest and simplest clutch, ideal as a first project. It's made from Pizza Lycra Ribbon with a 12mm crochet hook and has a fresh, summery look. See the Ada Mini Bag Kit or try the free tutorial on YouTube. Level: beginner.

2. Velvet Ada Bag — the chic mini clutch for evenings

Same compact shape as the Ada Mini but in velvet ribbon: the effect is soft, refined, perfect for a night out. Available in intense colors (fuchsia, burgundy, black). See the Velvet Ada Bag Kit. Level: beginner.

3. Loretta Bag — the classic clutch with a spring clasp

The quintessential clutch in the Macrè catalog: classic rectangular shape, spring clasp that "clicks" when you close it, rigid structure that maintains its shape. The classic version in cream or black cord is the most requested for ceremonies. See the Loretta Bag Kit. Level: beginner-intermediate.

4. Loretta Lurex Bag — the evening version of the classic

The same Loretta but in shiny lurex cord, with color variations that include gold lurex, silver, and burgundy lurex. It's the perfect clutch for evening weddings, gala dinners, New Year's Eve. See the Loretta Lurex Bag Kit. Level: beginner-intermediate.

5. Miriam Bag — the elegant clutch with sophisticated details

A more structured clutch, with textured stitches and refined details. The Miriam Bag is designed for those who want to go beyond the basic model and have already made their first clutch. Level: intermediate.

Closures: the detail that makes all the difference

The closure is what distinguishes an "amateur" clutch from a professional one. Here are the main options and when to use them.

Spring clasp

This is Loretta's iconic closure: two flexible rods that "click" when pressed and keep the bag closed with a small amount of pressure. Available in various sizes in our 19 cm Spring Clasp (and other sizes). Ideal for: classic rectangular clutches.

Satchel clasp

The satchel clasp is a metallic plate with a tab that hooks into place: reminiscent of 1960s-70s bags. Ideal for: structured clutches with a flap.

Click-clack clasps

Click-clack clasps are metallic plates with a snap system, elegant and sturdy. Available in various sizes and finishes in our click-clack clasp collection. Ideal for: larger and formal clutches.

Magnets and magnetic closures

Magnetic closures are invisible from the outside, perfect when you want a minimalist look. See our bag magnet collection. Ideal for: clutches with a clean design and no visible closures.

Which clutch for which occasion

Occasion Recommended model Yarn
Daytime ceremony (wedding, communion) Classic Loretta, Miriam Cream or black cord
Elegant evening (dinner, gala) Loretta Lurex Gold/silver lurex cord
Summer aperitif Ada Mini Colored Pizza Lycra Ribbon
Autumn-winter evening Velvet Ada, Matilde Velvet, chenille
New Year's Eve, luxury event Loretta Lurex Shiny lurex (gold, silver)

3 mistakes to avoid when making your first clutch

  1. Underestimating structure: a clutch must maintain its shape. If the yarn is too soft or the stitch tension is too loose, the clutch will "flop" and lose all its charm. For your first projects, choose a classic cord (not lurex) which is more forgiving.
  2. Skipping the lining: a clutch without a lining looks unfinished. Even a simple glued lining (or hand-stitched for those who feel up to it) makes a huge difference. We will discuss this in detail in a dedicated article coming soon.
  3. Underestimating the closure: the closure must be decided before you start working on the clutch, not after. The size, shape, and position of the closure influence the final stitch pattern. We've always indicated this in our tutorials, but it's a point where many beginners slip up.

Frequently asked questions about crocheted clutch bags

How long does it take to make a clutch bag?
It depends on the model and your skill level, but on average: 6-8 hours for an Ada Mini, 8-12 hours for a Loretta, 10-14 hours for a Matilde or Miriam. These are approximate figures that can double if it's your first time making a clutch.
How many skeins are needed for a clutch?
Generally one or two skeins of the recommended yarn are enough. For a classic Loretta, 1 x 500g cord is needed; for a lurex version, 1 x 250g cord. In our kits, the quantity is already pre-measured.
Is it difficult to attach a spring clasp?
It's not difficult, but it requires precision: the clasp needs to be inserted between the crocheted fabric and the top fold of the clutch. Our step-by-step video tutorials show you how to do it, even for beginners. The important part is to measure the clasp beforehand before starting the top edge of the bag.
Can I make a clutch without a tutorial?
You can, if you already have experience with basic crochet stitches and reading patterns. However, it's strongly recommended to start with a tutorial—even if just for the final part (closure, lining, edge) which is the most delicate.
What do Macrè clutch kits contain?
Each clutch kit contains: the correct amount of yarn (in your chosen colors), the clasp, any accessories (chains, handles), and access to the exclusive step-by-step video tutorial. All in one shipment, hassle-free.

In summary

The clutch bag is the perfect project for those who want a handmade bag that is noticeable and stands out, but without the commitment of a large bag. Our advice for beginners: choose a "classic" model (Loretta or Ada Mini), a beginner-friendly yarn (classic cord or pizza ribbon), and start with a kit that includes a tutorial—you'll get the hang of it with the first project, and from the second onwards, you'll see your skill level quickly improve.
